Upper Year Student residence application information

Upper Year applications for 2020-2021 are now closed and all spaces are full. If you would like to apply to be on the waitlist should a space open up, please email reshouse@queensu.ca

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, the University is actively engaged in planning for various potential scenarios for the fall term. We appreciate that this is a time of uncertainty for all and we will continue to communicate directly with you with more details regarding course delivery and residence options for the fall term.

I am an upper-year student who has already selected my residence room for the fall – can I still move in as planned on September 5?

We currently expect that you will be able to live on campus. Your room assignment may change, and the move-in date may be adjusted to meet physical distancing requirements during the move-in process. If you choose to cancel your contract by June 30th, you will be eligible to receive your deposit back (it will be credited to SOLUS); if you choose to cancel, a room will not be held for you for the winter term.

If I decide not to live in residence, can I get my deposit back?

Normally, deposits are not refundable. This year, deposit refunds will be available, once final decisions are made about the fall semester. We will communicate directly with any student who has made a deposit, to advise you of your options and applicable timelines for a deposit refund, once further details are available.

I am an upper-year or graduate student who hasn’t applied to live in residence in fall or is currently on a waitlist. Will there be spaces available?

We do not have all the answers yet about residence availability and operations, but will share information as soon as we have it. We ask for your patience as we continue to plan for the fall term.

  • Applications are available through the student housing gateway and remain open until January 17, 2020 at 4:00 pm EDT. Please view the Upper Year Fee Schedule for 2020-2021 for full fee details.
  • If you are successful in the residence room lottery, you will be notified on January 20, 2020. You will then have one week to submit an $800 non-refundable deposit to secure your spot.
  • You can pay your deposit online, by telephone banking or by wire transfer. We do not accept cheques or credit cards.  Please note that telephone/online banking payments can take up to 5 business days to reach us.

Jean Royce Hall

Jean Royce Hall was built in 1974 and is named after Jean Royce, Queen’s Registrar for 35 years (1933 – 1969). The 12 individual houses within the Jean Royce complex are named for former faculty and trustees. A mixed-gender environment with housing for over 700 residents in total, Jean Royce is just a short 20-minute walk from main campus with bus service available. The houses located within Jean Royce Hall include Angus, Boucher, Bryce, Curran, Douglas, Healey, Laird, Miller, Roy, Shortliffe, Tracy and Trotter. Please note that there are no elevators in these buildings.

Watts Hall

Watts Hall, located on lower Albert Street, was named in honour of Principal Emeritus Ronald Watts, the University’s 15th Principal from 1974 to 1984. Along with Leggett Hall, this residence opened in September 2003 and features 211 beds arranged in 21 beds on the ground floor and 38 beds on floors 2 through 6.

Residence Accommodations

If you require specific accommodations – either health or non-health related as part of your residence application, you must submit your request using our specific accommodation forms by the required deadline of January 17th, 2020 at 4:00 pm EDT.


We are excited to allow you the option to choose your own residence room through self-selection for the upcoming year. You will still need to meet the required deadlines for residence application and deposit to be eligible. 

If you are successful in the residence room lottery, you will be notified on January 20, 2020. You will have one week to submit an $800 non-refundable deposit to secure your spot.  Specific room selection date, time and instructions will be emailed on January 29, 2020.  Designated self-select dates and times are determined based on your lottery number.

If you are unable to select your room during your designated timeslot, you will automatically go into the next self-selection group to ensure you are given the chance to self-select.  If you choose not to self-select you will be placed by lottery number in the rooms remaining.

  • January 17, 2020, the upper-year residence application closes. To be placed on the waitlist after this date, please contact Reshouse@queensu.ca.
  • All applicants (successful and unsuccessful) will be emailed on January 20, 2020.
  • If you are successful in the residence room lottery, you will be notified on January 20, 2020. You will then have one week to submit an $800 non-refundable deposit to secure your spot.
  • Specific room selection date, time and instructions will be emailed on January 29, 2020.
  • The online room-selection process will occur in early February 2020.

Frequently asked questions

Why Watts Hall instead of Smith House?

The number of beds available to upper year students was decreased this year to accommodate our commitment to guarantee residence for all first year students. Knowing the experience of first year and upper year is different and students have different priorities, we don’t assign first year and upper year students to the same floor. Watts Hall has the number of beds required to accommodate the number of upper year spaces available.

Why is it a lottery this year?

In the past few years, there has been an increased demand for upper year spaces and fewer available beds. We felt a lottery was a more fair process than first come, first served.

I don’t want to live at Jean Royce Hall. Why can’t I indicate that on my application?

All students who are successful in the lottery will be able to choose their own room based on their lottery number. Students will be given one of 4 times to log in to choose their room. Students with the lowest lottery numbers will go first.

You are not asked to choose a building preference because you can choose based on the rooms available during your time slot. You will receive specific instructions regarding self-assignment when you are sent your time slot.

Before I select my room, I’d like more information about my room (ie. what size is the bed, is there a fridge? Wifi? What amenities are in the building I’m thinking about choosing)?

Please visit the “our buildings” tab on the Queen’s residence website. It has specific details regarding the amenities for each building, descriptions and pictures of typical rooms and furnishings in that building, internet availability, bed sizes etc.

I’ve selected a room but want to change it.

We will be providing room change request forms to upper year students to request room changes beginning May 1st, 2020. The form can be accessed on the Student housing gateway. As we anticipate all rooms to be full, room changes will be offered based on withdrawals/cancellations that we receive between April and August move in.

The building I want is full, is there a way for me to know if a room opens up or can I get on a waitlist for that building?

Once your room selection is complete, that is your assigned room. You will have the opportunity to request a room change beginning on May 1, 2020.

I’m not happy with the choices that were left for me to select. What can I do to get a better room?

Your choices were reflective of the rooms available based on your lottery number. There will be an opportunity to request a room change beginning on May 1, 2020.

I have a health accommodation but didn’t submit the form and none of the rooms meet my needs. What can I do?

Please have your health care provider submit the Residence Health Accommodation Form (2020-2021) as soon as possible. We will do our best to meet your accommodation needs when suitable rooms become available through cancellations and/or withdrawals.

I have an approved health accommodation. What if there are no appropriate rooms available to meet my accommodation needs?

If you have an approved health accommodation, we will provide a room that meets your needs and will provide your allocation to you separately.  You will be exempt from the self-selection process.

I am withdrawing from Queen’s. Am I able to give my room to another student I know?

Rooms that become available through withdrawals and cancellations will be offered to students who have submitted a room change request in the order the requests come in to the system unless there are students prioritized to move for health accommodations.

How can I tell which rooms have already been selected?

They will not show as available rooms when it is your turn to self-select.

I’m not able to make my assigned self-selection date/time. What do I do?

You will be able to self- select in all of the time slots following your designated time until the self-selection process is complete.  If you have not self-selected when the self-selection process is complete, you will be placed in one of the remaining available rooms.

What if I don’t want to self-select? Will I end up with a terrible room?

All of our buildings have unique characteristics and although they differ in age and design, we find it’s the residence experience that students enjoy and not the specific building.

I want to be on the same floor as my friend or I want my friend to be my can-mate, what can I do to make this happen?

Speak to your friend about their lottery number and designated self-selection time slot. Coordinate with your friend to select a room on the same floor.
