Residence Application Process FAQs

When can I apply?

Our residence application system will be available February 1, 2016. We encourage you to watch our videos and read instructions carefully before applying

What’s the deadline for applying?

Your application and deposit must be received by our office no later than 4:00 p.m. on June 8, 2016. If you apply on time, you are guaranteed a space in residence — however if your application is late, you will be placed on a waiting list for a room.

How do you assign residence rooms?

Each student is randomly assigned a lottery number using a computer program. Using this number, the computer program goes through each application sequentially. The chances of getting your preference depends on a number of variables, including the lottery number, the number of students with similar preferences, and the availability of particular preferences in any given year.

When do I find out about my room assignment?

We typically notify students about their room assignment in late August.

I’d like to room with my friend – can I do that?

You can request a specific roommate on your application, however, you must:

  • Be of the same gender
  • Know your potential roommate’s full name and 8-digit Student ID
  • Select ‘double’ as your first choice for room preferences
  • Ensure that your potential roommate also chooses you and ‘double’ as their first preference
  • Please note that roommate requests are not guaranteed.

What are your residences like?

We have 17 residence buildings on both west and main campus – and they vary a great deal in location, size, age and amenities. Rooms within buildings also vary in size and furnishings. Visit our website for details, virtual tours and videos about our buildings.

Can I request a specific building?

Our lottery system is designed around room types, not buildings, so we do not accept building requests. Every year, students tell us that it’s not the building that makes residence home, it’s the people!

What’s included with my residence fee?

All first year students have meal plans included as part of their residence fee – you can find out more about the options and features of our plans at: dining.queensu.ca.

When do I have to pay for residence?

Half of the balance of your residence payment is due on September 30, 2016; the remainder is due on January 31, 2017.
