ResRules – Sanctions (Clear Language)
What types of sanctions can occur for violations of residence rules?
There are a wide variety of sanctions, ranging from a Written Warning for first time, relatively minor offenses all the way to Removal from Residences. Following is a detailed list of sanctions. Please note that sanctions assigned for a particular offense may vary depending on individual circumstance, number of offenses and other factors.
The following is a clear language version of the sanctions. If you would like to see the official language, please refer to your ResRules handbook or find them here.
Written Warning – This is a formal letter following a meeting with a Residence Facilitator. It will be kept on file and be considered as part of any future ResRules violations.
Bond* – This is an amount of money that will be owed if and only if a future violation of ResRules occurs. If a future violation does occur, this bond will be charged along with any other fines or sanctions associated with the later violation. All proceeds from bonds are donated to charity. Bonds range from $50-$300.
Fine* – a charge levied for a violation of ResRules. The fine will be charged against
a student’s university account. Fines range in amounts from $50 – $300.
Educational Sanction – a project assigned to a student to help them better understand ResRules or the consequences of their behavior. Can include letters of apology, written assignments, answering questions or other projects. This does not affect academic standing – “Educational” simply refers to the project educating the resident.
Alcohol Probation – a part of a behavioural contract which documents an amount of time that the resident will abstain from using alcohol. Individual contracts vary, and the length of time and consequences for violation will be tailored to the individual situation.
Meeting with a Residence Life Coordinator or Senior Residence Representative – a formal meeting with either a Residence Life Coordinator or another Senior Representative of Residence Life, to discuss and address behaviour in residence.
Behavioural Contract – a document that requires the resident to meet specific behavioural standards. Individual contracts vary, so the standards a resident must meet and consequences for violating the contract depend on individual circumstances. Consequences can include a fine, bond, or loss of privileges.
Restitution – any damage, clean-up or other costs associated with a violation of ResRules will be charged to a resident’s university account. Residents are responsible for their guests actions, so damages caused by a guest will also be charged to the resident. These costs may come on top of bonds, fines, or other sanctions.
Loss of Privileges – a temporary or permanent loss of residence privileges (e.g.,guest privileges, building privileges, etc.) as a result of an incident.
Relocation – a permanent move from a room in one residence building to another, which may also include a ban from re-entering that residence building.
Suspension from Residence – a temporary removal from residence. The resident may also be banned for re-entering any residence buildings for the duration of their ban.
Residence Eligibility – revocation of readmission to residence or University owned off-campus housing.
Removal from Residence – a permanent removal from residences. This may be accompanied with a ban from re-entering any residences for a set period of time.
* all monetary sanctions will be donated to a charity by the appropriate Residence Council
