What to Bring

You might want to bring some things that make you feel at home!

Don’t forget:

  • Bedding and  a favourite pillow (note: some buildings have single beds; others have extra long double beds. We recommend waiting to buy sheets until you have your room assignment.)
  • Winter clothing
  • Favourite books and pictures
  • Hangers
  • Alarm clock
  • Desk lamp
  • Decorations –posters, plants, photos, etc
  • Storage boxes for your room (there is no extra storage in residence buildings)
  • A small first aid kit, thermometer, hand sanitizer, flashlight and batteries
  • Dishware and eating utensils
  • Laundry bag
  • Bathrobe and container for soap, shampoo, etc.

You might also want to bring…

  • a small fridge (note: some buildings have fridges in each room)
  • Sticky-tack adhesive for decorations
  • Semi-formal wear
  • Ice skates
  • Ear plugs
  • Memory foam for your bed
  • Shower flip flops

We provide:

  • a bed (in some buildings, this is an extra long double bed, in other residences, this is a regular single bed)
  • dresser
  • desk
  • bulletin board
  • bookshelf
  • chair
  • mirror
  • one data connection and cable for each student
  • Laundry facilities and a laundry card that allows you to use the machines (you will need to load funds on the card)

Some residence floors have a common room and a small kitchen equipped with a refrigerator, stove, iron and ironing board, while others have a main common room in the building.  Some residences are equipped with snack machines, exercise bikes, TV’s/DVD players, microwaves, pianos, pool tables, video games and photocopiers. Some residences are also equipped with wireless internet, and in-room TVs and fridges. Please see individual building descriptions for details.

Please DON’T bring:

  • Glass beer bottles and / or large volume containers (e.g. kegs)
  • Candles, fireworks or firecrackers
  • Halogen lamps or sunlamps
  • Large stereos or sub-woofers
  • Expensive bicycles – bike theft is common on campus; we recommend bringing an older or less expensive model for getting around
  • Furniture – rooms come furnished, and you are not permitted to remove any furniture from your room
  • Hotplates and small cooking appliances (toaster, toaster oven, deep fryer, rice cooker, microwave ovens, immersion heater, bread makers, coffee makers, etc)
  • Illegal drugs and/or controlled substances
  • Weapons of any type or size (martial arts weapons must be stored outside of residence)
  • Pets (even little ones) * with the exception of service animals.  Read our policy:  Queen’s Residence Service Animal Policy
